An Ella Wheeler Wilcox poem:

One ship sails East,
And another West,
By the self-same winds that blow,
Tis the set of the sails
And not the gales,
That tells the way we go.

Like the winds of the sea
Are the waves of time,
As we journey along through life,
Tis the set of the soul,
That determines the goal,
And not the calm or the strife.

Life and circumstances happen; trying to control external forces zaps us of vital energy. Living powerfully is choosing who we want to be in the face of life’s circumstances. For example, I am committed to love and connection, and many times I’ve lost sight of my soul’s purpose by prioritizing being right and proving my point (this makes me think of one of my favorite Sade lyrics, “Love is Stronger than Pride”). When I bring mindfulness, I restore my power and am then able to choose curiosity, compassion, creativity and love. What is your soul’s goal in this moment? What are you deeply committed to?
